Pony Stories 164

23 Jun

This was something I realized when I was reading Presenperfect’s Fallout: Equestria long-form read’n’review:  Fun bit about FO:E. In the story it’s mentioned that the reason the Everfree Forest is so dangerous, and has become even more so since the end of the world, was because there was a evil force there that the elements of harmony were holding back. When they were removed, the evil force got very bad. It is kind of funny how some of the things in this story got reinforced by the show in odd ways.

Not related at all, but I’m pretty sure I’ve got a few new people reading the blog since last I hawked my wares here. I don’t write pony fan fiction, but I do write original stuff. If you like scifi/fantasy stories you might check over here or simply go up to the ‘Stories’ tab at the top of my blog to check out the three short stories on amazon. My Stories. Or just continue down below for today’s review-ish thoughts on pony fanfics.

A Hell of a Time by Aragon

This is written by one of my favorite fanfic authors. Long Story Short, Things Went Down is still one of my favorites despite the writing being kind of middle-of-the-road. That one just had such a great sense of momentum to it. Whereas the Daring DONE! and associated sequels are still some of the funniest things I’ve read ever. Family Matters is probably a close second in this author’s work of pure comedy. Today is a Good Day to die was wonderful surrealist absudity. Train On Fire, Full of Orphans made me ashamed to be laughing at it, but that didn’t stop me laughing. On the non-comedic side of things, I consider Born On A Rock Farm to be a work of art.

Nineteen Neighty-Four by Blueshift

Okay, I want to call this a work of genius. A near perfect blending of MLP and 1984. Really nothing more to say about it. It is exactly what you should expect, written very well. An example of what fanfic is capable of. As well as being very, very silly.

Tonight I Shall Be Laughter by Cloud Wander

This is a fanfic I’ve heard about from several sources. Glad to discover it is as good as I’ve heard. One of the best ‘right after Luna returns’ stories I’ve read. Plus plenty of funny bits, and Steve the river serpent makes an apperance. Which is always nice.

A Lost Track of Time by NotARealPonydotcom

Lots of fun. Pretty much what the description says and pretty good execution of the premise. Cude humor and lots of implied, heavily implied, just off camera sex. I wouldn’t mind reading more stories in this version of Equestria with these characters.

What You Leave Behind by Blueshift

I thought I had read this, but apparently I either didn’t or just missed the ending. One of the many reaction fanfics after the season 4 finale. Just a little light fic, short and sorta fluffy.

Friendship is Optimal: The Longest Night by Eakin

I really like the FiO universe. It’s the best kind of logic puzzle scifi, kind of like Asimov’s robot stories. This particular FiO side story is quite good. As expected from one of my favorite authors. It is pretty much a demonstration of how easy it is to manipulate someone when you control time and everyone around them. The basic human brain is such a shoddy piece of equipment that direct control isn’t really needed to mess with it, if you know what you are doing. I did like that all the military guys thought that Celestia-AI would use various forms of torture to get what she wants. It shows that they really didn’t understand their enemy at all. I was impressed because the story didn’t end like I thought it would. It was a pleasant surprise.

A Hell of a Time by Aragon

Right! The actual review. Pretty good. Yeah, the reason this is so popular is probably because of Twilight. The first bits were funny, but kind of bland funny. The part that made me laugh the most was the three princesses talking about Twilight and then the end when they are talking to Twilight about the situation. Great comedy, but I liked both the Done! series and Long Story Short a bit better. I suspect the reason this was so popular was a combination of the S4 finale being so fresh in people’s minds combined with a similarity of thought about Twilight. I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who thought that Twilight Sparkle was not the princess of friendship, but was actually the Princess of War. Anyway, this pretty much a situation of ‘author so good that his bland stuff is better than a lot of authors good stuff’. Pity his really good stuff isn’t as popular, but that’s what you get from the masses. I read the DONE! stories out loud to my mom and we both laughed lots. Don’t intend to do that with this one, so take what you will from that.

Oh, and regarding certain comments in the blog post from the author about this story: Probably makes me weird, but I totally see Long Story Short and other stories as taking place in Equestria. My personal MLP includes all of that sort of non-nice stuff outside of the show. In conclusion, I give this story a big MEH. Majorly Entertaining and Humorous. Or something. That sounded a lot better in my head. Anyway, pretty good but not as good as the author’s other stuff that I’ve read. Except maybe Wine and Toothpaste.

Would this count as an instance of “burying the lede”?

Only if this was a news establishment. In these parts it’s just comedy.

Are you seriously just messing with Aragon? XD

Maybe a little bit, sure. I might have been a bit tired and loopy last night when I wrote those bits up. Still, the review at the bottom is pretty much my reaction to the story.

Also, by the time of this review, A Hell of a Time is the highest rated fic in Fimfiction again :V

I seriously don’t get why so many people like it. I guess I already explained this in that blog post, but it still baffles me a little.

Just hit the zeitgeist at the right place at the right time. I still think it falls about in the middle of your stuff, but popularity and quality are pretty much unconnected. Glad I could give a bit of amusement to go with your confusion.

Also, wow. You did knock Hard Reset off the top spot. Pity, that’s a better story. I’m tempted to downvote yours just to see what that does to the ratings.

Uh. If you do that, I’ll go down to place number twenty or so, if I remember correctly. I’m only first because one of the fifteen dislikes disappeared.

    So, please, don’t do that : V

Ah ha! So you do want first place. Wasn’t going to anyway. Just like to think up ways to game systems, always too lazy to actually do any of it. So the default thumbs up and favorite got applied, like I do to each of your stories that I like.

Why, yes, I like being first place. It’s a perfectly healthy ego trip, and it allows me to sing Imagine Dragon’s “I’m on top of the world” and mean it.

Now, talking about the reviews, Nineteen Neighty-Four and FiO are two fics that I never read but really should. I love Asimov and Orwell, so I really don’t know what I’m waiting for here. Eh, I have a long summer ahead of me. I’ll read pony pieces and re-read War and Peace.
