Pony stories 178

07 Jul

Woo! Best 6th of July I’ve had in years. Well, mostly because the local 4th of July celebration was moved to the 6th because of weather problems. Still, was a decent time even if big events like that aren’t really my thing. In even more local news (i.e. this blog) I’ve decided to attempt updating the big master list of reviews once a month, but go back to adding in the reviews from all the sites/people I’m following. So should have a whole lot to do the last week or so of the month. Of course, my reviews will be linked pretty much as soon as they get posted. Gotta get the VIP treatment on my own blog at least, right?

Flying Lessons by Ponyman

Hee. This reminds me that I’m still disappointed that season 4 didn’t include a episode that was Rainbow Dash teaching Princess Twilight Sparkle how to fly. As the main plot of the episode. This was another popcorn fanfic. Fun, but not memorable. Had to actually re-check the story when I typed this up because I couldn’t remember anything from it since I read it a week or two ago.

Faster by Einhander

This was really good. A be careful what you wish for story. About what Rainbow Dash would do with a wish. How her personal flaws could lead to her downfall when her limits are taken away. The ending is a bit sad, but I also think it could be a bit happy as well in a certain light.

Gobbling and Other Traditional Pursuits by LadyMoondancer

These were pretty good. They really did capture the feel of fairy tales and campfire legends.

Country Guitar by NTSTS

Huh. Not sure how I feel about this one. Decently written, but bland enough that I took a break from it halfway through. So it’s a short story that couldn’t hold my attention for the whole story. It refers to sex, but never explicitly shows it. Basic premise is that Applejack gets jealous when she catches Big Mac having sex with Fluttershy (pretty sure it’s Fluttershy). Then the end is the two siblings having makeup sex after a bit of an argument about it. Yet all I can think about is how does Applejack play the guitar with hooves? Fiddle, sure. Bass, wure. Unicorn with a lyre, why not? Earth pony with a guitar just seems weird.

The Celestia Code by iisaw

This was not what I was expecting. It actually kept me guessing about a few things for half of the story. It was also really good. A lot of the details in this story is getting absorbed into my personal headcanon. Not a lot of things, ponies, or places, but this story dealt with Twilight Sparkle using magic in a really nice fashion. Twilight Sparkle in general was a joy to read here. A good mix of powerful alicorn and nerdy intellectual. It also has a very interesting backstory for both Sombra and Chrysalis.

So, all in all I liked this one quite a bit. I’d call it a action blockbuster, but intelligent with its premise and characters. Highly recommended. Oh, and a good use of footnotes for comedy and asides.

One late night, I was about to start reading The Celestia Code, but iisaw warned me that it was extremely addictive and that each chapter ended in a cruel cliffhanger, so if I wanted to get any sleep that night, his story wasn’t something I should start. Now though, I’m just more eager to read this on the 24 hour drive from EFNW back to SoCal, after your review confirmed what I already suspected, that this is an excellent story.

I certainly liked it. Hope the con continues to be cool. Also, you might not want to both drive and read a good story in the later hours of the 24 hour drive because you’ll be tired after driving for 18 hours straight.

Don’t worry, I’m in a carpool. I won’t be doing the two activities simultaneously.

Ugh, I hate NTS for writing that story. I think it was the first thing of his I ever read, too.

Well, then your experience of reading his stories could only go up!

Yeah, it was one of those deal-breakers for me. Well-written incest is still incest.

Thank you for the kind words about my story! I greatly enjoy your blog even though I don’t often comment here, and you’ve pointed me at quite a few fics that I’ve found to be excellent reads. That you liked The Celestia Code makes me feel like I’ve paid you back in some way.

Cool. Glad I could provide some guidance as well. Looking forward to when the sequel gets finished.
