Pony Stories 255

26 Oct

Almost to the next big milestone number! Pony Stories 256 is tomorrow! Woo! Okay, enough of that. For anyone who didn’t notice, put up the first R4 post over on Fimfiction. Titles of stories and link to each day’s post here, and a re-post of slightly edited old reviews. I’m hoping to keep with it every day, but no promises. It’ll be much more a same form of post every day. Almost, you know, organized and maybe even pretending to be professional and all that. None of the ramblings you get here. Plus you can play a new game! How many of the authors of the old stuff are still around? In the first two posts, the answer is kind of depressing. Though here is still where the new content is going to be. Hopefully the links to each post over on FimFiction will be a useful compromise. In other news, anyone else seen those fan comics shipping Trixie and Maud together? They are adorable.

Ascend by xTSGx

A pre alicorn Twilight Sparkle alicorn Twilight Sparkle story. That sentence was fun to write. Neat concept and I do like panicky Twilight. In fact, all the characters in the story were protrayed well. In spite of all of that, I didn’t finish this story. First, the single qoutation marks to indicate Twilight’s internal dialogue drove me nuts. Second, the pacing was glacial. It takes whole chapters for scenes that should’ve been 2-3 paragraphs. With writing a little rough on top of that I only got halfway through. I’d still recommend it, but with a warning about the pacing and rough writing.

Twilight Sparkle Is… Princess Under Fire by PegasusMesa

Cool concept, but gets dragged out a bit too long. I think I enjoye the outright parodies of this concept such as Mission: Implausable. Meta-parodies like this one just don’t hit the same buttons in my head.

Friendship is Optimal: Broken Bird by Eakin

Another pretty good Friendship is Optimal short story. I have a little nitpick with the girl getting uploaded, but unlike Always Say No I can see the arguments for it happening. This is basically just another story in how CelestAI tricks people into uploading.

Hooray for the arbitrary numerals to which we assign great import! 😀

Hey, 256 is more important that most of the arbitrary numbers around.

The writing and characterization in “Ascend” made me drop it. In particular, Twilight is too panicky and not at all clever.

Which just goes to show that just as people can like a story for different reasons, people can dislike a story for different reasons.
