Pony Stories 354

09 Mar

Another post scheduled ahead of time! At this rate, I’m going to have to fill up the intro paragraphs with actual creative stuff instead of grumbling. The horror! The horror! Wait, do ponies buy their hazmat suits from a pony whose talent is making them? Or are they all just hoofmade by the ponies who wear them?

The Long Haul by RedSquirrel456

Yummy worldbuilding goodness. Good enough that I want to read the epic fantasy story that leads up to this scene. The characters have good characterization in the brief time the story has. I liked this one quite a bit and would recommend it.

Just a Few Things by shortskirtsandexplosions

Nice little slice of life story. Wish Big Mac had a bit more dialogue. Don’t like it when authors just give him those two words. Nice Rainbow Dash moment at the end. Well, actually, Rainbow Dash has a lot of good moments. Good Dash in this story here.

The Cutie Mark Inspector by Blueshift

A very silly comedy. As is Blueshift’s style most of the time. I think I might need to read more completely ridiculous stories. My brain was trying to protest how out of character Twilight was, and in a story like this that’s like complaining about how horses don’t come in pastel colors.

It’s very Blueshift, isn’t it? Though I think the OOC-ness is a valid complaint even in a very silly comedy; I think the story could still have worked with Twi being a bit more, well, Twi-like.

Well, it varies. The style of comedy where you use the expected characterization against itself, then it being out of character becomes part of the style and therefor kind of silly to complain about it as long as the author does it well.

Someone cleverer than me could here write an interesting paragraph about “in-character OOC-ness” and when it works. In this story, it didn’t quite work for me, but I’ve read other fics (including by Blueshift) where it seems (again, to me) to be more satisfying.
