Worldcon 2015 day two

21 Aug

Looking at over 100 entries on my fimfiction feed last I checked. Might break 200 before I get back. That’s going to be annoying to scroll through. Wish there was a better easy to view them.

Anyway, another good day. Always nice to get people books they like, see all the different people going by. Last worldcon I attended was 10 (jeeze, maybe 15?) years ago. As I’ve mentioned in other places, I found it the least diverse of all the types of cons I’ve been to. Very narrow demographics. The one this year is much more spread out across the age ranges. Plus I have seen a whole bunch of ‘First Worldcon’ tags on badges. So something send to have gotten a bunch of younger (relatively, say under 50) fans to join the event at least in the last decade and possibly in the last year or two. Which is a good thing.

Also, still enjoying that corsets are such a popular fashion trend in a broad swath of fandom. There isn’t a lot of cosplay (seen some good ones though) but the Victorian-ish clothing is just pretty.

That something would most likely be the battle between the Sad Puppies, the Rabid Puppies, and the Insulars. A lot of those newcomers are only there because the Sad Puppy campaign really pushed for people to know that Worldcon was supposed to be open to everyone, not just an elite few.

Careful bringing that up with the wrong crowd there, though. As I understand it, there is some serious bad blood going around as a result, and no love lost between the Insulars who see their nice, neat little con being threatened and a lot of the newcomers.

Haven’t run into anything like that. Though the dealers room isn’t exactly the place for in depth discussion about that sort of thing. Mostly just a lot of people enjoying the con.

Yeah, I mean what kind of crazy people would want awards for good writing rather than adhering to a narrow ideological point of view?
