Pony Stories 40

Another set of pony stories. Also been re-reading some that I’ve previously enjoyed since I’ve been putting them into my Calibre library and actually putting in star ratings, tags, wordcounts, covers, and other misc metadata. Trying to build up a proper personal library/archive of the fan fiction I’ve been reading for later reference and/or use. Been kind of fun actually. Sign I am a huge nerd that I like data entry as an activity from time to time.

Once I get done rating and data entry for all the fan fiction on my computer I really should do another wordcount tally and maybe put a list of stories I’ve read by 5-star rating? For when I might actually want to use this blog as a method to actually review and recommend things to people instead of just randomly rambling to a empty internet like I’m doing now for practice. Will have to think about it, and besides I still have that MLP worldbook to work on that I’ve been slacking off about.

Pony Stories 39

Man, weird having to adjust to reading longer stories. Fallout: Equestria, Clean Slate, The Immortal Game. All took me more than a day of dedicated reading to chew through. As I mentioned earlier, Fallout: Equestria consumed my waking hours for three days. The other two didn’t grab me quite as much, but Clean Slate was full length novel size and The Immortal Game was like two or three novels long. Even the few shorter stories I’ve read between them didn’t seem to go by quite as fast. Might be getting back in the habit of longer fiction. Assuming I can find others of this high quality instead of the mediocre crud that pushed me into pony fan fiction in the first place. Maybe I should try some more non-fiction.

Not going to keep up with the daily posting in a while, but struggling as long as I can hoping to get back into the groove after the anime con knocked me out of the rhythm.

Pony Stories 37

A few more pony fanfics. Been reading some non-pony stuff lately, plus the huge wonderful story that is Fallout: Equestria. So writing this intro when I finished the first story below and hopefully will have some more to add to it. Not planning on posting this until I have at least three stories to comment on so it might be a while between starting and posting. Nope, one short one and one longer one. Wanted to get at least one post out today in a effort to keep my posting every day thing going.

Pony: Fallout Equestria

Fallout: Equestria by Kkat was a piece of fan fiction I had been semi-avoiding for a while. It is one of the behemoths of the pony fanfic circles in both reputation and sheer size. Since I have been enjoying the shorter fictions because I have gotten tired of the padding of most modern novels I was really worried about a story that could be measured against whole series of books.

I was sad to finish this book. Reading it was almost as much of an experience as reading Eternal was, though for wildly different reasons. That’s not a comparison I make lightly given how highly I regard that other story. I was sad to get to the end of Fallout: Equestria but I would not like a sequel and making it longer would not have really worked. It was already immensely long, clocking in at over 600,000 words. Not a slow moment and not really any rushed moments. The fast moments were scenes of intensity and the slow moments let the reader learn more about the characters. I have been reading more short stories because I’ve come to the conclusion that most novel writers use the padding of a long story to cover up their weaknesses. I did not find that to be the case in this story. It wasn’t the idea-dense story of Quantum Thief, but it wasn’t the light and fluffy slice-of-life that most of the Lunaverse stories (all of which would fit inside the word count of FO:E) that I enjoy are.
