Dungeons & Dragons ideas

Have managed to actually be in a weekly gaming group for a couple of weeks. Have three sessions of old-school D&D behind me now and that is awesome. Been having a lot of fun playing suicidally confident magic-user. Though when the group starts a proper megadungeon next week I’ll be rolling up a druid and playing a bit more seriously. The last three sessions have been more or less one-shots, so I was a bit more carefree. Now it will be time to be careful since I actually care if my character survives. So I’ve been thinking about gaming and reading my gaming blogs and checking the fun gaming stuff I’d bookmarked back when I was flooding my brain with old-school D&D stuff. Figured I’d do a post to show off the houserules and modifications I’d be using if I was the DM. Which I might be if I start up my own weekly game in the near future now that I’m getting into the swing of going out and being around people I don’t know at the game shop.

We’ve been playing with the ruleset Swords & Wizardry (complete rulebook edition).

Pony Short Stories 45

Title of this post is a bit misleading. I’ve only got one story to put in this one. I read it a while ago and was waiting to read another few to make it a batch post, but haven’t read any other new pony fanfics recently. So I’ll put in a few comments about stories I’ve re-read recently and call that good enough.

Book: Equoid

Equoid: A Laundry Novella by Charlie Stross is a non-pony story I finally got around to reading. It is the latest story in the series that started with the Atrocity Archive. I really liked the short story that introduced me to this series, and I really liked the first book, but everything since has been downhill. I didn’t like this one much even though it had one or two somewhat interesting things in it. The whole ‘unicorns are evil’ thing is something I’ve run across two or three times before, but this was at least a original take on the concept. Just not, you know, all that new for me.

Pony Stories 44

More pony fan fiction! Nothing spine-grabbing in this batch. Even some I really didn’t like, but at least it’s not boring stuff I paid for. Every time I decide I should read some actual published original work I find myself stopping to think ‘I could pay for this and take a chance, or I could just go try a new fanfic and not spend any money on a better chance of enjoying it’ and I find myself heading right back to fimfiction.net to see if any of the stories I’m waiting for has finished up.

Pony Stories 43

I keep thinking I’m about to escape and I get pulled back in! Another round of pony fan fiction stories. Though I’ve been reading a few non-pony stuff as well. Nothing new, but re-reading a collection of essays from William Gibson that are quite good. Hopefully will be getting to the book on the Roman army I got a few months ago, maybe even get back to reading more of my complete Lovecraft collection so I can finally put that on my have read it list. Of course I’m thinking about re-reading Fallout: Equestria just to see if it is as good the second time through, so that’ll probably eat my waking hours for the next couple of days instead.
