Pony Short Stories 6

09 Aug

Since I have nothing better to put above the ‘fold’ as it were, just going to mention that these story comment posts of mine aren’t exactly reviews. They are more trying to grab what is in my mind when I finish a story. Sometimes I’ll even take a few notes during the story if I come across something cool I think I’ll forget by the end. Not that most of the pony fan fiction is long enough for that.

Anyway, a few more My Little Pony fanfics below. Think I’ll try for three or more this time. Most of them were just brief little stories with not much to talk about.

A War of Words – The Opening of the Guard by Georg

Telling stories via the form of letters seems to be semi common in the MLP fandom. Given the high profile of letter writing in the show, it shouldn’t come as a surprise I guess. This story is a comedy, which was nice after the last two. It also involves something of a prank war between the royal sisters. Another concept that gets a lot of fiction devoted to it.

Nothing of much substance in here other than the really funny jokes. Only thing close to a worldbuilding bit is the idea that before Luna’s exile her royal guard had equal numbers stallions and mares, but after a thousand years of Celestia being the only ruler the royal guard had shifted to being all stallions. In a more serious story this could be a interesting thing to explore.

A Candle To The Sun by Moabite

A short little piece focusing on Twilight’s feelings for Celestia. Twilight is just the right amount of nervous for what is going on, Spike is very well characterized. Good story, but not a whole lot to say about it that isn’t spoilers. Very short.

The Numbers Don’t Lie by shortskirtsandexplosions

This is another great example of the ‘could be a episode of the show’ type of story. I tried another fanfic by this author and just couldn’t get into it, ended up not finishing that one, but this one was much better. Really just showed how much word/style choice can affect reading enjoyment.

This one was about a magical artifact that makes the number of lies you told float over your head, in real time. So whenever you tell a lie it chimes and the number goes up one. This causes all sorts of problems, but the favorite character moment was the reaction of Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie. The two of them just enjoyed it. Turning it into a drinking game of trying to tell the most unbelievable story without triggering the number increase. Their reactions were totally perfect. As were the rest of the mane six, with Fluttershy’s number increasing in decimals, and rarity having the highest number. She does fashion and marketing and is a drama queen, so she hits triple digits pretty fast.

The moral of the story isn’t explained very well. A bit muddled, but a very good story anyway. Would make a fun episode and would even make a good two-parter.
