Pony Stories 224

16 Sep

Well, still working at two long non-pony books. One fiction, one non-fiction. Mote in God’s Eye and Dungeons & Dragons & Philosophy, respectively. With some pony short stories around the edges just to keep from feeling the withdrawal shakes. I’m 50k words into Mote and not a single horse pun!

Anyway, hitting target saturation on the number of potential pony fanfics to read. So tossing it out there. Anyone got a particular story they want me to test-read for them? A particular story that might look good, but you either don’t have the time or are too cautious to read it yourself. Toss a fanfic title my direction and I’ll be happy to check it out for you.

Diamond Tiara Gets Filthy by The Elusive Badgerpony

Well-written porn. The mix of equine and human terminology was a bit confusing. Guessing the story has anthro versions of the characters, but it was odd. The prose is flowery and a bit overwrought, but it works. It reads like our perspective character using fancy and flowery language to hide and/or justify what is going on. As for how predatory Diamond Tiara is being towards her father, I couldn’t help but notice that it is a first-person perspective so all we get is his perceptions of the event. Everything we hear about her actions, motives, emotions, tactics, are all his thought and guessing about the situation. Sure, that can’t cover all of it, but some of the early parts of the story really did feel somewhat like, as I mentioned not two lines ago, he is trying to justify his own actions as those of a victim. Her actions in the second half of the story shows that she isn’t exactly a victim either, but the perspective choice and flowery language did get me thinking about, well, perception and the lies we sometimes tell ourselves about the things we want that we shouldn’t have.

We Who with Songs Beguile by Loganberry

I’d heard good things about this story. Turns out it totally deserves the praise. A wonderful look at ponies from an outside viewpoint. Not to mention a wonderful example of how to worldbuild without using exposition. Every phrase, every name, each choice of words in general paints some of the world the birds are living in. A different, but recognizable world that the ponies also inhabit. Highly recommended.

Just a Puddle by Anon3mous1

This is an effective short story. Somewhat predictable. In the broad strokes if not the precise details. With just a bit of ambiguity to keep things firmly in the dark genre tag. It’s a brief glimpse at the same themes as the much longer story I Forgot I Was There by GaPJaxie.

FFS, I guess I’m going to have to read that Diamond Tiara fic now. 😐 There’s no escaping it.

I’m having a tough time avoiding it myself. I really, really don’t like reading clop because it’s the exact opposite of what I want to get out of ponyfics, but it sounds like a great character study.

I wouldn’t call it clop, since that at least implies a certain shallowness. But it is pretty much 2/3rds porn though, so I’m not sure I’d recommend it. It’s certainly not just another clop fic.

[title] by [author] (word count, thumbs up)

Fics that I’ve heard good things about:

Under A Luminous Sky by Jake The Army Guy (100k, 460)
Eyes Without a Face by theycallmejub (118k, 170)
Fallout Equestria: Pink Eyes by mimezinga (135k, 2000)

Well, thank you for the suggestions, but two problems spring up. First is I was kind of hoping for shorter stories. I’ve got a dozen full novel length non-pony books I’d like to get through fairly briskly with pony stuff around the edges.

The second is that all of those are stories that I’ve turned down in the past as not really being to my tastes from the descriptions, and in the case of the last one a review. First doesn’t seem to have much of the pony/Equestria I enjoy in it. The second one… Mare Do Well is the only episode I have seen exactly once, and that was after avoiding it for a while. No big reason. Just kinda bounces off my brain. The third is the one I read a review for and it sounded like really not my thing. Given how much I love FO:E, I’ll probably get around to it someday. But it sounds like I would dislike the main character to an extreme degree so I’ve been avoiding it.

That’s alright. I’d offer a shorter fic, but anything interesting with <50k words gets read immediately.

I've been avoiding "FOE:PE" for the same reason. I find infantile characters more annoying than endearing. I'd reconsider reading "EWaF", though. Cold in Gardez called it "one of the most impressive stories I've read in any format".

Speaking of Cold in Gardez, you should review his entire canon.

But that would require me to read the 5 stories of his I haven’t read yet! That’s like, 0.4 Fallout Equestrias of fanfic to read.

I read crosswords 42 weeks ago and remember the most interesting part to me was that it agreed with my head canon that there are other Alicorns out there beyond Equestria. I think mayor Mare and Cherokee were in it too. I left the following comment:

“I liked this story a lot, but it felt a little unfocused. I’d be very curious to learn about these 17 other alicorns. Is queen whitemane one of them?”

EDIT: after rereading it, it’s basically headcanon about Alicorn magic disguised as a slice of life about crossword puzzles. Enjoyable enough, though you have pickier standards than I.

Gosh, I somehow missed this post entirely. All I can say is that I’m very flattered. And “thank you”, naturally!

It’s fairly easy to miss one of my posts. If you forget to check it one day, whoosh it goes by. Plus I don’t give any indication of what stories are below the break so glancing at the page doesn’t help.

Well, I do admit to not having followed the blog as much as I’d have liked recently. I won’t bore you with the details, but there’s been an awful lot going on and fanfic has been somewhat squeezed. That looks as though it’s about to calm down a bit, though. So I’m hoping to be able to make at least the occasional contribution to the comments in the near future.
