Pony Stories 794

02 Sep

I wonder what a newcomer to pony fan fiction might think if they stumbled onto FimFiction in the last week or two. I bet they would be very surprised how popular Sunset Shimmer is. I also ponder what someone from earlier in the fandom would think, when Sunset Shimmer was not exactly viewed positively by many.

The Belonging Herd by GaPJaxie
A cool concept excellently explored, but with one or two bits missing that make me want to shout at the screen at how dumb the story is at those specific points. Still, as I said an interesting concept and a different look at Twilight.

I did not like this story. let us start with the things I liked. the characters were all pretty cool. had believable and interesting characters that I’d love to read more story about.
the things I didn’t like was pretty much everything else. there was no word building, no cool sci-fi tech stuff, at least three times I was actually confused about what happened because I couldn’t parse a sentence I read, and last I can’t believe that a pony raised by Twilight Sparkle could do what the main character does at the end if the story. the story also commits a personal frustration of mine in that it has a pony grab a pistol to shoot at things. I can accept a pony grabbing a lot of things, but using a pistol is not one of them. there was a changling character that not once changed shape and only was different than a point by walking in the ceiling in two scenes.
so yeah, I really didn’t like this one. had a okay start that I was giving a pass because I was hoping it was setting up for cool sci-fi adventure later. nope.

Time and Time Again by The Albinocorn
This was a fun and silly story. I enjoyed it.

This was an odd one. I’m not sure if I liked it or not. It started out strong. I enjoyed the main character and got some good Pegasus world building sprinkled through the whole thing, but… well, farting plays a serious role (both in quantity and tone) in the story and there was an entire chapter of the two characters doing public Pegasus mating displays written and treated like straight up porn. So… well written but weird. I would classify it as romance and not shipping, but not sure if that’s a good thing in this particular case? This author continues to write stories that hit my brain kinda sideways. Not in any surreal fashion. I mean just seems to not be aligned like how my brain is calibrated to experience stories. Sort of a narrative uncanny valley. Not surreal or weird to be way out there, but not quite up to what my brain considers how to classify various types of stories.
