Pony Stories 321

14 Jan

In honor of the nice number in the title of this post, I’ll forgo the usual rambling in the intro. Mostly because I want to say this is the funniest piece I’ve seen in a while. Mostly because I actually have fondness for that movie (Street Fighter) and that line in particular is still one of my favorites ever. Sometimes you can find little bits of amusement in post comment threads.

tuesday

Anyway, below the break is another landslide of ponyfic reviews.

The Talk by Alexstrazsa

The story/plot itself is barely there. However I did enjoy both Octavia and Vinyl. It had a fun example of both of them. Close to fando. Standard, but not cliche and no sign of romance or shipping at all. Which is always a surprise in a fanfic involving the two of them.

Winds of Change by Masterweaver

Same basic concept as Irony of Applejack. One of the mane six is a changeling and doesn’t know it until the wedding. This isn’t as good, though also lacks the terrible villain so it almost evens out. I’d recommend this if you like changeling stories. Didn’t have as much cool world building as I like. Did have a very fun Lyra in it, however.

Just Dodge! by DannyJ

Decent Discord story. Not a whole lot to say since it is pretty simple. I prefer the explanation in (discords game? The OE where he plays chess with Twilight and can predict everything) but this is a pretty good version.

Leviathan by Horse Voice

Not bad. Not much pony either. All of it is dialogue from a well spoken diamond dog who talks about something not even hinted at in the show. So its basically a well written piece of original fiction. Actually a bit lovecraftian in feel.

The Comforting Heart of Darkness by Harmonic Revelations

Eh, no real point. Its decently written and the discord here has some depth, but no real complexity. He is very much a one note figure that spends the entire internal monologue going round and round the same point without really saying anything new.

What is love? by Anonymous Pegasus

A thousand words or so of a changeling thinking about what love is. No big insights, no profound thoughts, just wondering in a late evening. Kind of bland, but certainly not bad.

Thy Words… by Lady Grey

Very sweet. Just a little Princess Twilight adjusting to being a princess story. Had a pretty well done Princess Luna as well. I’d recommend it as a nice short bit of reading.

Children of a Lesser Dragon God Boy Whelp Thingy Guy by The Descendant

Nice story. Drags just a little in the middle, and is badly subtle about several things, but it was a good read.

The Great Ponyville Snowball Fight by 8686

So much fun. Really liked this one. Would love to see this as an episode, or maybe an hour long special. Wouldn’t really work as a two partner, no good middle pause point. One of my favorite bits was Celestia demonstrating her skill in battlefield expedient snowfort creation. There was a lot of fun bits, plus as sweet and happy ending. Highly recommended.

The Art of Rainbow Engineering by Pineta

Hee. I wish this was one of a whole series of official books for teaching concepts with mlp. It was a nice mix of story, explanation, and humor. Very happy to have read it and I’ll probably read it again at some point.

Rainbooms and Rationality by Pineta

More fun with science! Again, this would be awesome teaching about the scientific method. Just as highly recommended as the previous one. Which I didn’t mention, but I would highly recommend it.

Rock Farms and Nuclear Reactors by Pineta

Ponies, science, and engineering. Three great tastes that go great together. Probably one of the best depictions of atomic power I’ve run across, certainly the most entertaining.

Domestic Rock Science by Pineta

Science! Another wonderful example of explaining science using ponies. Though this would have been just awesome with a visual component. Having this story as a little ten minute animated short would be amazing. Also, to answer Spike’s question, that’s probably one of the few kitchens that would have gems laying around.

The Great Ponyville Snowfight is on my list too. I’ll be getting to it sometime this January 🙂
